Professional Development for School Teachers
Swimming New Zealand can tailor professional development workshops to meet the needs of the teachers. We can provide your school with a mixture of theory and practical based learning.
Theory workshops could cover:
• State Kiwi Swim Safe programme overview
• Linking with the 2007 NZ Curriculum
• Aquatic Education for students: Combining swimming, water safety, survival, critical thinking and beach safety skills
• Progressions through all stages of learning swimming and survival skills
o Confidence, Submersion, Floating, Gliding, Kicking, Stroking and Breathing
• Class management
• Ability grouping
• Assessing and tracking your students
• Equipment
• Water Safety Skills
• Games and activities for the different swimming progressions
• Dry land activities
• Inclusion throughout swimming lessons
• Resources including the national State Kiwi Swim safe achievement certificate
Practical workshops could cover:
• Hands on support during your schools learn to swim days working with teachers on pool side.
• Pool sessions with teachers in the pool experiencing basic stroke principles and progressions.
Professional Development and support for all primary and intermediate schools from Swimming New Zealand will be provided at no cost.
The school are responsible for providing the facility or venue to hold the theory workshop in. The school are also responsible for providing a pool facility or hire lanes at a pool close to the PD workshop (if required) and cover costs associated with this.
