Two records at NZ Age Group Swim Championships

7th March 2007

There were two national records set on the second night of finals at the New Zealand Age Group Swimming Championships in Hamilton tonight.

West Auckland’s Starn Simpson set a new mark in the 15 years 50m breaststroke while Howick Pakuranga’s Jeffrey Arona-Tuisana’e broke the mark for 12 years and under over the same distance.

Simpson missed the record by just 3/100ths of a second in the morning heats but clocked 30.18s in the final to break the old mark held by world championship-bound Glenn Snyders by nearly 3/10ths of a second.

Arona-Tuisana’e clocked 33.84s to set the new mark for 12 years and under.

The Howick Pakuranga club enjoyed a strong night with three titles, two of them to 13 year old Ewan Jackson who took out the 200m freestyle and 200m backstroke finals. This went with his two victories on the opening night.

The other club win went to outstanding Cameron Burrows, who again held off the strong charge by the visiting Japan swim team to win the 15 years 400m freestyle.

Japan swimmers were fastest in seven finals tonight, although they are not able to secure national titles.

Other strong New Zealand performances came from Grace Marriner-Duncan (Metro) who held off the Japanese to win the 50m butterfly final while Commonwealth Games representative Daniel Sharp (West Auckland) took out the 50m breaststroke for swimmers with a disability.

The championships continue until Saturday.
