Three finals for Kiwi swimmers on last night
New Zealand will contest three finals on the last night of competition in the pool at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games tonight.
Helen Norfolk (pictured) progressed comfortably with the fourth fastest time for the 400m individual medley clocking 4:51.46 behind England’s Rebecca Cooke in the second heat. Earlier the Australian pair of Stephanie Rice and Jennifer Reilly topped the first heat, although Norfolk’s medal chances improved with world championship finalist Lara Carroll missed out on the final. She has been ill this week and was well off the pace.
The men’s 4x100m medley relay team progressed as the third fastest qualifier for tonight’s final behind Australia and Canada, although England and Scotland used a number of alternates.
The Kiwi quartet clocked 3:47.27, six seconds outside their national record. Cameron Gibson recovered from illness to anchor the quartet and will be joined by Scott Talbot-Cameron and Glenn Snyders. Corney Swanepoel produced the fastest butterfly split of 52.27 but will be replaced by 200m gold medallist and 100m bronze medallist Moss Burmester in the final.
The women’s 4x100m medley relay went through to a straight final tonight.
