State Insurance NZ Swimming Championships – Day 5 Heats

The scene is set for a big night ahead on the penultimate day of the State Insurance New Zealand Swimming Championships in Auckland.

Tash Hind (HPC Capital) led fellow Commonwealth Games medallist Hayley Palmer (North Shore) in heats of the women’s 100m freestyle. Hind clocked 55.83 to win heat six while Palmer went 55.97 in heat seven with both chasing the world championship qualifying time in the final tonight which stands at 55.24.

It should set up one of the best contests of the week with fellow Delhi relay medallists Amaka Gessler (56.58) and Penny Marshall (57.30) third and fourth fastest respectively.

Delhi silver medallist Gareth Kean was the fastest qualifier in the 200m backstroke in 2:04.72 ahead of talented teenager Corey Main (Howick Pakuranga) in 2:07.20 and Daniel Bell (HPC North Shore) 2:07.84 who will scratch from the final with illness.

Canterbury’s Natasha Lloyd (North Canterbury) was fastest in defence of her 200m breaststroke title clocking 2:35.23 in the heats ahead of Katie Kenneally (Neptune) 2:38.22 and Grace Francis (North Shore) in 2:38.98.

Glenn Snyders (HPC North Shore) topped qualifiers in the 200m breaststroke in a comfortable 2:18.52 ahead of Carsten Corazza (Howick Pakuranga) 2:20.70 and Luke Westgaard (Roskill Magic) 2:22.78.

Auckland’s Phillip Ryan (Waterhole) was fastest in heats for the 1500m freestyle in 16:10.68 ahead of Queensland-based Dylan Dunlop-Barrett (16:11.93), who broke the national record for the 800m, with the final tomorrow.

Tonight’s final session which also features the final of the women’s 800m freestyle starts at 6pm.
