State Insurance NZ Swimming Championships – Day 1 Heats

Commonwealth Games medallist Glenn Snyders was the standout performer in the heats on the open day of the State Insurance New Zealand Swimming Championships in Auckland.

Snyders (HPC North Shore) went under the qualifying time to top the heats of the men’s 100m breaststroke at the West Wave Aquatic Centre in Henderson, in the event that doubles as the official trial for the FINA World Championships .

The 23 year old clocked 1:00.89 in heats of the 100m breaststroke which is under the world championship qualifying time by nearly a second, although he will need to repeat it in tonight’s final to secure a spot in the team for Shanghai.

Fellow Delhi medallist Lauren Boyle (HPC North Shore) impressed as fastest in heats of the 400m freestyle in 4:12.32, less than a second outside the world championship qualifying time.

Boyle, 23, has returned from the US for the championships where she is completing her degree at the University of California.

In other heats, Southland’s Natalie Wiegersma was fastest in heats of the 200m individual medley in 2:16.6 while the Roskill magic pair of Nielson Varoy and Corney Swanepoel topped qualifiers in the 50m butterfly in 24.37 and 24.57 respectively.

Roskill’s Danielle Koni (1:02.21) edged Christchurch’s Sophia Batchelor (AquaGym) by 1/100th of a second in heats of the 100m butterfly and Dubai-based visitor Velmir Stjepanovic was quickest ahead of Kane Radford (HPC Swim Rotorua) in the heats of the 400m freestyle in 3:58.82.

Tonight’s final session starts at 6pm.
