Salt seventh in Panpacs open water event
Auckland student Kylie Salt has finished seventh in the open water swim that brought to a close the Pan Pacific swim championships in Canada today.
Salt, who was fourth in the Oceania open water swim, dropped off the main pack on the second of three laps in the 10km event at Elk Lake in Victoria.
However the Mt Eden club swimmer took a brilliant line on the final lap to catch the lead pack, eventually finishing seventh.
It proved a disappointment for Masterton 32-year-old Kirsten Cameron who was forced to withdraw after being kicked shortly after the start.
Cameron, the bronze medalist at the Oceania event, received a rib injury at the world masters championships in San Francisco earlier this month where she established a new world record.
She was kicked sharply in the ribs after the start and managed to get through to the 5km mark before withdrawing.
Swimming New Zealand director of coaching Clive Rushton said that after medical tests they will determine if Cameron will be fit enough to compete in the world open water championships in Naples next week.
