New Zealand Age Group Swimming Championships – Day 2 Wrap
There were five national records set on the second night of finals at the Mayfair Pools New Zealand Age Group Championships in Wellington tonight.
They were led by the brilliant Christchurch 15-year-old Sophia Batchelor (Aquagym) who won both the 50m butterfly in a new national record time of 27.55 and the 100m freestyle in 57.01. Both swims earned more than 750 FINA points.
The highlight was a superb performance by Howick Pakuranga breaststroker Jeffrey Arona-Tuifana’e who set a new mark in the 16 years 50m breaststroke. He clocked 30.62 to take nearly a second off Glenn Snyders’ previous age group record and gain a superb 806 FINA points in the process.
Gisborne’s Laura Quilter (Comet) set a new record for 18 year olds in the 50m butterfly, clocking 27.25s, worth 778 FINA points.
Howick Pakuranga enjoyed a strong night with Bradley Arona-Waquanivavala winning the 14 years 50m breaststroke in 30.62, for a new national mark.
Others to impress tonight included Junior Pan Pacific representative Samantha Lucie-Smith who won the 17-18 years 400m individual medley. Lucie-Smith clocked 4:56.12 to record 753 FINA points.
Christchurch’s Matthew Hutchings produced a stunning performance in the 400m freestyle, at 16 years the fastest of all heats tonight in 3:59.56 for an impressive 775 FINA points.
