McLean shows swimming versatility at Panpacs

19th August 2006

Outstanding New Zealand backstroker Hannah McLean showed her versatility on the second night of finals at the Pan Pacific Championships in Canada today.

McLean, the Commonwealth record holder in the 100m backstroke, finished seventh in the A final of the 100m freestyle at Victoria.

The 25-year-old was the best of the Kiwi contingent on a quiet night of competition. She clocked 56.38s in the final, just outside the personal best she set in the morning heats.

Helen Norfolk was the only other Kiwi in an A final, finishing eighth in the 400m individual medley in a solid swim, just over three seconds outside the national record.

Clubmate Dean Kent produced an impressive effort to finish second in the B final of the 400m individual medley in 4:21.25, less than three seconds outside his own New Zealand record. His time would have placed him sixth in the A final.

There were also encouraging efforts from the two young breaststrokers in the team. Glenn Snyders (North Shore) was fourth in the B final of the 100m in a personal best 1:02.71, less than half a second outside Paul Kent’s longstanding New Zealand record.

Canterbury’s Annabelle Carey was also fourth in her 100m B final in 1:10.66, only 1/10th of a second outside her own national record.

The women’s 4x200m freestyle relay combination of Lauren Boyle, Norfolk, Alison Fitch and Melissa Ingram finished fifth in the final.

The Commonwealth Games bronze medalists were drawn beside the crack USA team and finished 11 seconds outside the time they set in Melbourne.

The meet finishes on Monday (NZ time).
