McLean, Norfolk into A finals at Panpacs day two
New Zealand swimmers qualified for five finals on the second day of competition at the Pan Pacific Championships in Canada today.
Hannah McLean and Helen Norfolk led the way, making it through to the A finals of the 100m freestyle and 400m individual medley respectively.
Their North Shore clubmates Glenn Snyders and Dean Kent qualified for B finals along with Christchurch’s Annabelle Carey (Aquagym).
Mclean, fourth in her specialist 100m backstroke final yesterday, showed her prowess with a personal best 56.19s, only 2/10ths of a second off the New Zealand record. She had the 12th fastest time but with a limitation of two swimmers from any one country in the A final, McLean was promoted into the top field for the evening programme.
The rest of the New Zealand freestyle group was slightly off their top times apart from Corney Swanepoel who topped the men with a personal best 51.63.
Carey was outside her best clocking 1:11.76 for the 14th best time in the 100m breaststroke that saw her through to the B final. It was the same for Snyders who was only a whisker off his best to also clock the 14th fastest time in the heats.
Norfolk clocked 4:48.78 in her heat of the gruelling 400m individual medley for the 12th best time but like McLean, she was promoted to the A final.
Her clubmate Dean Kent, who had a much-needed break after the Commonwealth Games, was expectedly below his best to clock 4:28.05 to make it into the B final of the 400m medley.
New Zealand will also be looking for success with men and women in the 4x200m freestyle relays in the evening session.
