Ingram on fire in the Games pool

Ingram on fire in the Games pool
20th March 2006

Kiwi swimmer Melissa Ingram produced a superb personal best to head another double on the penultimate day of competition at the Commonwealth Games today.

Ingram and her North Shore clubmate Hannah McLean qualified for tonight’s final of the women’s 200m backstroke.

Dean Kent bounced back from his fourth placing in the final of the 400m individual medley last night to top qualifiers for tonight’s 200m medley final.

Also through to tonight’s final is Daniel Sharp, seventh fastest in the 100m EAD freestyle.

``It was quite tough backing up and I think a few of those who raced last night were foxing,’’ Kent said. ``You can’t rest on the laurels of your qualifying times. At stages he felt quite tough but I definitely had quite a lot left and I have bounced back really well.’’

Kent won the second heat in 2:02.65, just over a second outside his New Zealand record set at the Athens Olympics.

Ingram clocked 2:12.34, a full two seconds quicker than her previous best set four years ago. She qualified second fastest behind Australia’s Joanna Fargus with teammate McLean safely through in fifth fastest with a time of 2:14.37.

McLean faces a demanding programme tonight with three finals in the 200m and 50m backstroke and the 4x100m freestyle relay.

West Auckland Aquatics emerging star Lauren Boyle , a key member of New Zealand’s bronze medal winning 4x200m freestyle relay, withdrew from the 400m today to save herself for tonight’s relay final.

There are 11 finals on a busy night tonight, with New Zealanders involved in the seven of them. They comprise:

100m butterfly: Moss Burmester, Corney Swanepoel

50m freestyle: Alison Fitch, Nichola Chellingworth

200m backstroke: Melissa Ingram, Hannah McLean

100m EAD freestyle: Daniel Sharp

50m backstroke: Liz Coster, McLean

200m individual medley: Dean Kent

Women’s 4x100m freestyle relay: Boyle, Fitch, Helen Norfolk, McLean.
