Disabled swimmer claims record at NZ Age Groups

6th March 2007

Christchurch disabled swimmer Sophie Pascoe earned the only national record on the opening night of finals at the New Zealand Age Group Championships in Hamilton tonight.

Pascoe, who won a medal at the world championships last year, took out the 14-years and under 400m freestyle at Te Rapa tonight. She set a new national mark in the process, clocking 5:22.96. The below the knee amputee had to overcome a mishap when her goggles snapped while she was on the blocks for the final.

Pascoe (QE2) won the gold for swimmers with a disability ahead of Rebecca Dubber (North Shore) and Mary Fisher (Upper Hutt).

Two swimmers each won two finals today with with Ewan Jackson (Howick Pakuranga) taking out the 50m backstroke and the 200m butterfly titles while Mitchell Donaldson (Coast) won the 200m butterfly and 200m individual medley.

The young New Zealanders found some stiff competition in the form of the visiting Japan youth team who were fastest in all but one final, although were not eligible for the title.

Auckland’s Cameron Burrows (Howick Pakuranga) was the only Kiwi to win outright in taking out the 15 years 200m butterfly in 2:06.06.

The championship continues until Saturday.
