Burrows leads Howick Pakuranga at age group swim finals

8th March 2007

Young Aucklander Cameron Burrows led another outstanding showing by his Howick Pakuranga club on the third night of finals at the New Zealand Age Group Swim Championships in Hamilton tonight.

Burrows, 15, won two titles tonight in the finals of the 400m individual medley in a slick 4:40.59 and the 100m freestyle in 54.80. It was an especially strong performance in the 100m freestyle with Burrows, who has save his best efforts for longer distances, upsetting the powerful visiting Japanese swimmers.

His clubmate Renee Stothard won the 13 years and under 200m freestyle to give the top club their third win of the night, followed by North Shore with two wins.

The sole New Zealand record fell to diminutive Hawkes Bay swimmer Jack Drury (Greendale) who set a new mark for 12 years and under in the 400m individual medley of 5:06.07. Drury impressed by winning the final of the 13 years and under in emphatic fashion by five seconds.

Whangaparaoa’s Mitchell Donaldson retained the lead as the most successful swimmer at the meet with two further wins tonight. The Coast 14 year old took his tally to six with victories in the 400m individual medley and 50m butterfly finals.

Burrows also picked up two wins tonight along with Commonwealth Games representative Daniel Sharp (West Auckland) who won the 18 years and over 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle for swimmers with a disability.

The New Zealand teenagers swam strongly tonight to split the titles with the outstanding Japanese team who dominated on the first two nights of finals.

The championships finish on Saturday.
