Education

All New Zealanders need to learn to swim.

Learners don’t become swimmers – much less competitive swimmers – by splashing around aimlessly in a pool. Education needs to be structured, well-organised, and motivating. Serious - in a fun way. Goals need to be set, programmes clearly communicated, achievements rewarded.

About Us

Let’s aim to make everyone taking part in Swimming New Zealand‘s Education courses feel they are part of a respected, successful programme. Ensure learners receive consistent, effective instruction; ensure teachers and coaches receive support and information. Value effort. Make sure everyone knows Swimming New Zealand is the organisation making the opportunity real.

And when the competitive bug bites, make the way to Competition crystal clear.

Why learn to Swim

Learning to swim
  • generates confidence in and around the water
  • develops fundamental physical skills of balance and coordination, kinaesthetic awareness and control
  • develops a sense of fun and feeling good from physical activity
  • enables physical activity in the water for life
  • provides the opportunity to take up other aquatic activity
  • allows participation in a very low impact sport and activity
  • allows access to the sport of competitive swimming which encourages success through personal bests other than comparison with others
  • In New Zealand the ability to swim adds a level of comfort in every day life, walking, cycling family trips to the beach as we can never be more that 20 km from water.
  • Is a potential life saver. Without a level of comfort and basic ability in the water, drowning is an ever present possibility

WHY BECOME A COACH OR TEACHER

Swim teachers and coaches give the gift of comfort and efficiency in the water. They enhance the bond between parents and infants through aquatic experiences. They are often the second teachers after the parent of pre-schoolers and enhance their growth to independence.

Swim teachers ensure school children can participate in a myriad of activity and sport in and around the water with their peers and families.

Swim coaches encourage success through monitoring of technique, fitness, skills and guiding swimmers through the steps to personal best success.
