Swimmers set for Commonwealth Games push tonight

The big guns enjoyed a quiet morning on the third day of heats at the Commonwealth Games Swim Trials in Auckland this morning.

The North Shore duo of Cameron Gibson and Corney Swanepeol, along with Canterbury’s Annabelle Carey, who missed qualifying by the narrowest of margins last night, topped heir respective heats at Waitakere City.

Gibson, who missed out on the Games time in the 100m backstroke by just 1/100th of a second, headed qualifiers in the 200m backstroke in 2:05.67.

Carey, 2/10ths outside the Melbourne mark in the 50m breaststroke, was fastest in the heats of the 100m this morning in a slick1:12.69.

Swanepoel was just half a second outside the qualifying mark to be fastest in the heats of the 50m butterfly with the trio all set for a major push in semifinals and finals tonight.

Games qualifiers Dean Kent, Moss Burmester (North Shore) and Lauren Boyle (West Auckland Aquatics) were all fastest in their respective heats of the 200m individual medley and 400m freestyle respectively.

Eleven swimmers and two relay teams have qualified for the Commonwealth Games in the first day days of the meet, which finishes on Saturday.
