Swanepoel fourth at World University Games

Swanepoel fourth at World University Games
13th August 2007

Corney Swanepoel (pictured) was the best of the New Zealanders finishing fourth in the final of the 50m butterfly on the penultimate night of swimming at the World University Games in Bangkok.

Swanepoel (North Shore), who qualified sixth fastest in the heats, produced a slick 24.07 to finish in a dead heat for fourth place, 3/10ths of a second behind the winner Sergii Beus (Ukraine) at the Thammasat University Aquatic Centre.

It was Swanepoel’s second A final of the championships, finishing only 19/100th of a second off the bronze medal.

His North Shore clubmate Moss Burmester placed fifth in the B final to complete a relatively disappointing meet for the world championship medallist.

Former Otago swimmer Andrew McMillan, recently moved to North Shore, finished third in the B final of the 200m freestyle in 1:50.98 with fellow Kiwi Michael Jack (West Auckland Aquatics) fifth.

Most of the New Zealanders are in action on the final day of competition with the best chance of success with Melissa Ingram in the 200m backstroke and England-based Cameron Gibson in the 50m freestyle.
