New Zealand chase swim success over Australia
New Zealand go into the final session of the Trans Tasman Cup swim series just eight points behind the two Australian combinations in Canberra tomorrow.
The New Zealand team grabbed seven wins in the first session of the final of the three test series at the Institute of Sport in Canberra. They have never won the age group series that consists of two Australian and one New Zealand team.
Remarkably after five of the six sessions in Sydney, Woy Woy and now Canberra both Australian teams are tied on 499 points with New Zealand on 491.
The Kiwi team grabbed four more national age group records tonight. They went to Orinoco Faamausili-Banse (Laser Mt Eden, Auckland) who won the 100m freestyle in 49.71, faster than he set two days ago, while Abby Shaw (pictured, Aquagym, Christchurch) also went faster than her record at Woy Woy in winning the 200m butterfly in 2:16.34.
Daniel Bell (West Auckland Aquatics) continued on his haul of gold medals with two more wins and two more national age records in the 100m butterfly in 54.56 and the 200m backstroke with a brilliant meet record of 1:57.16. This takes two seconds off Scott Talbot-Cameron’s previous record for 17 years olds, and is faster than the 18 years record.
The other wins went to Cara Baker (Kiwi West, Palmerston North) in the 800m freestyle in 8:47.05, the men’s 200m medley relay in 3:46.04 and the women’s 400m freestyle relay, who dead-heated for first in 3:54.22 after Baker made up 15m in her anchor leg.
The series is decided with the final session in Canberra tomorrow.
