Games veteran tops freestyle sprint qualifiers
The 1998 Commonwealth Games medalist Toni Jeffs impressed on the penultimate morning of heats at the New Zealand Swim Championships in Auckland today.
The 37-year-old Wellingtonian topped qualifiers in this morning’s heats of the 50m freestyle at Waitakere City. She clocked 26.41 in the heats, just 0.3 seconds outside the qualifying time for the Commonwealth Games.
Melbourne-bound Alison Fitch was second ahead of Athens Olympic finalist Michelle Englesman from Australia.
The usual suspects headed qualifiers in other heats today including world championship finalist Liz Coster and North Shore clubmate Scott Talbot-Cameron in the 50m backstroke and Helen Norfolk in the 200m individual medley.
There are six finals on the programme tonight with the championship finishing tomorrow.
