Fitch fastest in second morning of Games Trials

7th December 2005

Atlanta Olympian Alison Fitch produced an encouraging heat swim to highlight the second morning of the Commonwealth Games Swim Trials at Waitakere City this morning.

Fitch, 25, topped qualifiers in the 100m freestyle this morning, ahead of former world record holder Therese Alshammar (Sweden) in 56.84s, just outside the Commonwealth Games qualifying time.

It was a quiet morning with just three events after yesterday’s whirlwind start to the meet where five swimmers qualified for Melbourne.

Fitch was only 2/10ths of a second outside the qualifying time and pleased with her performance on the back of her Commonwealth Games qualifying performance with the Auckland team in the women’s 800m freestyle relay last night.

Alshammar, who is using the meet to prepare for upcoming European racing, was second ahead of North Shore’s Te Rina Taite and Australian Lara Davenport.

North Shore’s Cameron Gibson topped qualifiers in the 50m freestyle ahead of clubmate Michael Jack, while North Shore teenager Glenn Snyders was fastest in the heats of the 50m breaststroke ahead of Australian James Beasley.

There are nine finals on tonight’s programme starting at 6pm.
