Burmester adds to swim qualifying on final morning

9th December 2005

North Shore swimmer Moss Burmester blitzed the qualifying mark for the Commonwealth Games in the final morning of trials in Auckland this morning.

Burmester, who has already qualified in the 100m butterfly, topped the heats this morning with a 1:57.63, a personal best and a full three seconds under the Melbourne mark.

The 24-year-old was just 0.35 seconds outside the 19-year New Zealand record held by Anthony Mosse.

Otago’s Andrew McMillan was second fastest as he pushes for a Games qualification in tonight’s final.

World championship swimmer Kelly Bentley (Capital, Wellington) was fastest in the heats of the 200m breaststroke ahead of Canterbury’s Annabelle Carey, who has already qualified for Melbourne.

There will also be a looming battle in the women’s 200m freestyle with top qualifier Alison Fitch from North Shore clubmates Melissa Ingram and Helen Norfolk.

There are 11 finals on the card for the last night of competition starting at 6pm at the West Wave Aquatic Centre, Waitakere City.
