Two records at NZ Age Group Championships
There were two national records set on the second night of finals at the New Zealand Age Group swimming Championships in Christchurch tonight.
They both came in the finals of the 50m breaststroke at the QE2 Leisure Centre.
Auckland’s Shaquile Vaotu’ua (Onehunga) set a new mark in the boys 13 years final clocking 31.92s, while Masterton’s Neil Van Wijk won the 14 years final in 31.47.
The swim of the night was the final of the 400m freestyle with 5/100ths of a second separating the top three swimmers.
Taranaki’s Dylan Dunlop-Barrett (Bell Block) held on from the charge from behind to win the boys 16 years final in 4:01.67 with Christopher Ashworth (New South Wales) second 1/100ths of a second behind and Counties Manukau’s Cameron Burrows (Howick Pakuranga) third a further 4/100ths of a second back.
Dunlop-Barrett opened up a significant lead early before Ashworth and Burrows pegged him back with the three swimmers in a line across the pool over the final length.
New Zealand’s leading age group swimmers had some strong international competition swim visiting swimmers from New South Wales, Japan and New Caledonia competing.
The championships continue until Saturday.
