McLean continues record-breaking swim form

World championship medalist Hannah McLean continued to shine on the penultimate day of competition in China this morning (local time).

The North Shore swimmer, who bagged a bronze medal in the 200m backstroke at the Fina short course championships in Shanghai last night, was in superb form in the heats of the 50m backstroke. She qualified second in 27.92s to set yet another New Zealand record, breaking her 2003 mark by 3/10ths of a second.

Clubmate Liz Coster also went under the old record with 28.17s to qualify fifth fastest for tonight’s semifinals.

She also qualified for the semifinals of the 100m butterfly along with teammate Georgina Toomey in the last two spots.

Another through to the semifinals is Dean Kent as the 15th fastest qualifier in the 100m individual medley and Alison Fitch who was 14th fastest in the hearts of the 50m freestyle.

Helen Norfolk missed out on a place in tonight’s final in the 200m individual medley by just 4/100ths of a second. She clocked 2:13.99 to be the ninth fastest but more than a second outside of her New Zealand record.

The success for New Zealand in relays continued with the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team qualifying in third place behind Australia and the United States. The quartet of Nichola Chellingworth, Alison Fitch, Lauren Boyle and Norfolk broke the New Zealand record by three seconds, clocking an outstanding 3:40.95 in the heats ahead of tonight’s final.

  • 50m backstroke: Hannah McLean 27.92, 2nd (NZ record); Liz Coster 28.17s, 5th.
  • 100m freestyle: Cameron Gibson 49.42, 26; Robert Voss 50.45, 40.
  • 100m butterfly: Coster 1:01.09, 15th; Georgina Toomey 1:01.45, 16th.
  • 100m individual medley: Dean Kent 55.76, 15th.
  • 50m freestyle: Alison Fitch 25.36, 14th; Nichola Chellingworth 25.51, 17th.
  • 200m individual medley: Helen Norfolk 2:13.99, 9th; Cara Baker 2:20.46, 20.
  • 50m breaststroke: Glenn Snyders 28.25, 25.
  • Women’s 4x100m freestyle relay: New Zealand 3:40.95, 3rd NZ Record (N Chellingworth 56.07, A Fitch 54.63, H Norfolk 54.88, L Boyle 55.37)
