Big guns safely through on third day of heats at Swim Trials
14th December 2006

New Zealand’s leading swimmers set themselves up for a big night of finals on the third day of heats at the Absolute Insurance World Championship swim trials in Auckland this morning.

Most of the established stars worked comfortably through the morning heats ahead of tonight’s finals at the West Wave Aquatic Centre in Waitakere City.

They included Commonwealth Games representatives Annabelle Carey (Aquagym) who topped qualifiers in the 100m breaststroke, Melissa Ingram who edged North shore teammate Hannah McLean in heats of the 200m backstroke, Corney Swanepoel ahead of Moss Burmester in the heats of the 50m butterfly, Dean Kent on top of the 200m individual medley and Helen Norfolk who bested qualifiers in the 400m freestyle.

Rotorua’s Kane Radford was fastest in the men’s 400m freestyle heats in a personal best 4:02.62 as he prepares for next week’s Australian open water championships.

North Shore’s Megan Allan was quickest in heats of the 200m butterfly while 16-year-old Kurt Bassett (Laser Mt Eden) set the standard in the heats of the 200m backstroke.

Tonight’s programme starting at 6pm includes finals of the men’s 400m freestyle, women’s 200m butterfly, men’s and women’s 200m backstroke, men’s 200m individual medley, women’s 400m freestyle and the women’s 4x100m medley relay.
